  1. It is great to see you Jillian. These elk are incredible. I wonder what they think about carrying the huge horn on their heads. Such incredible serenity and stillness in these photos. Happy 2014 dear friend…xo

    • The elk are SOoooOOOooo incredible. If I were one of these bulls, I’d be exhausted from holding up a huge rack and I’d be hoping my antlers would fall off soon. In photo 2 and 3 you can see two of these bulls really resting, heads on the ground, soaking up the sunshine and taking a little weight off their necks. They were so beautiful and sleepy and restful…elk style hibernation. 🙂

Happy New Year to you too, sweets. I’ve been down with an awful AWFUL cold here and am just coming back to life. I missed all the New Year buzz while suffering a blistering fever and fuzzy delirium. I hope you had a good one though! XX

      • Glad you are better…the other half got some kind of flu the day before New Year’s but luckily he too is on the mend.

I noticed those pics and wondered if they slept that way, they are quite remarkable and I love the decoration at the base of their horns. Will talk soon. xx

  2. Magnificent creatures….that enjoy posing for the camera! Great shots!

  3. Your photography is stunning! So very jealous of the subject matter you always have!

    • I live in an uncommonly beautiful place that is close to lots of uncommonly beautiful places:) I’m thankful for the subject matter I always have! Thank you for being here, Emma.

  4. Damn, girl. Just….daaaamn.

  5. Spectacular! You Knock my socks off!!

  6. Would it be wrong if I wanted to smooch their faces??

  7. Well, for the love of Pete. I just adooooorre these guys. And that cute she elk up there. You know, the one with the earrings.
These images truly are terrific with such clarity and it shows you’re just doing what you love!
I’m sad to hear you were not feeling so good. Ick. I had that same thing last month.
    Get well, baby! xx

    • Oh…thank you L. 🙂 I do love what I do.

I’m getting better. This morning, I woke up for the first time in 5 days WITHOUT a raging headache or fever. I think I am on the mend. Officially.

  8. Wow-whee! Magic. I always think that where I live is the most magical place ever, but holy smokes! Happy Happy Happy New Year!

  9. ~you’ve captured the true essence and beauty of winter and nature in these shots…a beautiful moment indeed!~

  10. How did you restrain yourself from running out and hugging that cute cow?!

    • I didn’t. Robert restrained me.

      • I should add that I wanted to hug them and kiss that little flat spot between their eyes but I also had this wild urge, as I often do, to jump on one of their backs and ride off towards the horizon.

Have I ever told you that I often dream of riding an antelope across sage flats? I don’t ride it like a donkey either. There’s nothing slow and plodding about my antelope steed and I. We are GALLOPING across glimmering sage flats in my dream.

  11. Have you been to Elk Prairie in the Redwoods National Forest? It’s a campground over on the coast where you are literally camping right in the same fields where the elk eat / bed down. Then there is a hiking trail (2 miles or so) to the coast through the redwoods where you will generally see more elk and then….. HUGE bulls can be seen sleeping / walking on the beach and in the dunes. It is AMAZING! And then there is fern grotto on that same beach – A hiking trail that takes you up a stream through a sheer walled ravine that is covered in ferns. One of my most favorite places ever.

Are these photos in Idaho or are you at the National Elk Refuge in JH? They are amazing creatures, aren’t they? Your photos are incredible!

    • Wyoming! Elk refuge, indeed!

Yes. They’re wild and beautiful and free. Three of the very best things.

Love it there. Used to take long, long walks down the back side. So many opportunities to see wildlife. A couple years ago there was a mountain lion holed up with her cubs on top of one of the buttes.
Lol -I thought I recognized those hills and mountains in the background. Love it.

  13. Love this! Back in the day (1920’s)My gramma Pearl-who was in her 20’s- used to feed the Elk on the reserve outside of Jackson Hole…the reason she did this was b/c the team of horses that pulled the wagon were a little wild & no one wanted to do it!
She told me, ‘I’d just run them in to a snow bank to stop them’…
so matter of fact. I was trying to add a picture of her feeding one of the elk (she would put oatcakes in her mouth & they would nibble at them)
She was amazing! I think of her everyday. (:
    Thanks for the great pictures.
    Happy New Year
