IMG_5492elk goodIMG_3756IMG_3775 IMG_3782 IMG_3752I thought you kiddos could use a little pick-me-up this week so I’m doing a giveaway here.  I shot one of my favorite photographs of 2013 while I was out pheasant hunting with Robert in autumn.  It’s a shot of five horses loping away from where I was standing with my camera in a ditch on an Idaho backroad that took us to somewhere beautiful; the buckskin in the middle of the frame is frozen, mid-buck.  Sweet!   It’s not a technically perfect photograph, in fact, it’s a bit front focused for my liking, but I like it for the feel of it, for the freedom of it, for the symbolism, for the memory of that day when I was out with my man and our dogs, fall was fading into winter, the wind was bitter cold and we were having a delightful time gunning for dinner.

I loved that day.

I love this picture.

I’ve had it printed up on the highest quality metallic Kodak paper and mounted on a gorgeous wooden block — it has a lovely shimmer to it that you are going to seriously appreciate.  Minimal.  Classy.  Dare I say…modern?  It’s lovely and it is TINY.  It looks great on its own and wonderful if you have a cluster wall somewhere in your home.  This print measures about 2.5×3.5 inches and comes equipped to hang (there’s a hole on the flip side that makes things real easy).

As always, I do giveaways because I appreciate you being here.  There’s no need to tweet, pin, FB, insta or WHATEVER you crazy social networkers get up to on a regular basis!  All you need to do to enter is leave a comment on the end of this blog post with your email address.  Say whatever you want.  Come to think of it, I need some new reading material, give me a title or two if you can think of one.  If you win, I’ll hunt you down (in an un-creepy way).  Also, I should mention that this giveaway is mainly for this wee horse print but I always send out a bevy of goodies in my winner packages so prepare for some of my homemade organic Methow Valley peach lavender jam,  maybe some earrings and some other goodies, to boot.  If you fear entering this giveaway may be a waste of your precious time because you live in Zimbabwe, fear not, I will be glad to ship this magnificent prize anywhere in the world.

I’ll leave this post open for a few days before I draw a name.

Toodaloo!

NOW CLOSED ::: Photo Caption Contest

::WINNER WINNER::

It was hard to choose a caption winner, but I said I was going to choose one, so I resisted drawing a name randomly and sat down with a panel of three judges (myself included) and whittled down the options until a winner was found.  It was quite a hot debate.

With the help of Robert and my friend Bree, Corinna has been selected as the winner.  Her caption was a clever little tongue twizzler.

“Perched in the pit of a pine, poetical Penelope perceives her pivoting, pantomimic proprietress playfully projected by the plucky parachuting paramour in a play of peerless passion.”

Honorable mentions include:

“A flying metalsmith gathers no rust.”

“To hit the high notes in their duet, she needed a little help.”

“We HAVE an Internet connection, finally!”

Thanks to everyone who offered up a caption!  They were all delightful in every way.

Robbie came home from Alaska for two rest days.  Did I tell you that?  I suppose I didn’t.  He had been in Alaska for three weeks.  He’s back at work today and I just had a telly call from him informing me that he is about to jump a local fire and might be home tomorrow.  You know, I realized recently that in the past I may have been guilty of taking his safe homecomings for granted.  I remember being thankful for him each time he returned, but I’m not sure I felt deeply grateful that he was whole and well and alive.  I know.  Is there really a difference?  For me there is.  Each time he jumps out of a plane, has a safe landing, puts out a fire, and returns home well of spirit, body and mind I want to acknowledge it and be filled with gratitude.  We had a lot of fun on his two days off and I’m glad he was able to take those rest days here in the Methow Valley because:

1.  Most times he takes a rest day at whichever smokejumper base he is boosting…which can make for a really, dreadfully long tour wherein we both grow terribly lonesome for each other and begin to disconnect across the distance.  Which is awful.  Which feels awful.

2.  He let me take this photograph of us, nay, he enthusiastically tossed me in the air and put on a hippo mouth while I was taking this photograph (do you spy Penelope in the rotting tree trunk???).

What a man.

But I digress.

This is indeed a little contest.  All you need to do is dream up a caption for this photograph, leave your entry in the comment section on this post.  On Monday, I’ll choose my favorite caption.  If Robert is home, I’ll have him help me choose.  The winner of the contest will receive a copy of Don’t Let’s Go To The Dogs Tonight (which is ghastly and beautiful), some locally roasted coffee beans, a pair of earrings and some other sassy sundries.

  Get crazy.  Get creative.

Bonne chance!

[Sketching Spring Necklace :: sterling silver]

You’ve done it again.  Your support has helped us over the hump of winter, fed us, clothed us, paid our mortgage, put fuel in our trucks, fed our dogs their kibbles, the cat his tuna and our chickens their grub.  The best way I know how to say thanks is to do a giveaway and to say, thank you, until you know I really, deeply, truly mean it.

Thank you.

So much.

For all you do.

Thank you for reading this blog, for claiming my work (big pieces or small), for the encouraging notes you send me by mail, email, Etsy convo (sorry it takes me so long to respond, I really am the worlds worst emailer).  Thanks for telling me to write a book or to publish a collection of prose and poetry.  Gosh.  Thanks for that.  This is one of my main goals this summer, hold me to it.  Most of all, thanks for being just who you are because there are times when I think of you, or I read your comments on a blog post, and I really feel warm inside and understood and received and like my views and my lifestyle and the very who of me is respected and cherished — whether you live your life similarly or not — and that’s the sort of thing that makes me want to continue in this work and continue sharing my life with you in all the ways that I can.  You are courageously openhearted and open minded.  I’m proud of you for that.  You are part of a beloved community here and having you in my world, in our world, is a blessing.  All day long.  Every day.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR GIVEAWAY ENTRY:

If you would like to enter your name in the drawing for this Sketching Spring Necklace, please simply leave a comment on this blog post.  You can say anything you would like to say.  I would love to know the title of the best book you have read recently or the name of the album you are playing on repeat lately.  If you are shy, just say “Hi!”  There aren’t any rules.

I’ll randomly draw a winning name as soon as I am settled in the Methow Valley, at our summering grounds.  As always, my giveaway packages are little care packages so be prepared for the arrival of a bevy of love in your mailbox if you are the winner.  PLEASE NOTE:  If your comment does not appear in the comment section immediately it’s because it’s sitting in my behind-the-scenes comment moderation area and I’ll publish it as soon as I have an internet connection up and running once more.

Until then, with abiding affection,

The Noisy Plume

[Tintinnabulation Necklace: sterling silver, copper, enamel & rubber]

I’ve been tinkering about in the studio, trying to get my kiln working properly again, singing aloud as my hammers ping away at sterling and steel.  This is such a miraculously different winter for me.  I’m shedding those old habits of stress and pressured productivity in the studio (thanks to Robbie’s hard work this summer, and a good fire season), taking each day as it comes, as best as I can, spaciously, calmly, joyfully…and loving it.

This necklace is a result of prototype work I did yesterday.  It’s like a wind chime for your sternum and perhaps a continuation of this work that began last winter — some of the same stories are beginning to be retold in my design efforts.  It feels really good to have a rooted feeling at times, when I’m out there creating.  With this piece, the way the enameled layers jingle, dance and sing is really quite magnificent.  I’m pretty pleased with it but would love to develop a more sophisticated connection style for the enameled components.  I’ll keep working on it.  There will be more!  The original sketch of this piece was named “Tintinnabulation: Ring the Warren Bells” and it has an enameled rabbit as a “dinger” in the smallest enameled layer!  Tres mignon!  I’m going to attempt the creation of the original idea today when I finally make it out to the studio.   That said, this piece is really lovely and rather the perfect piece to wear whenever your soul needs a musical lift.

I thought I’d give it away.

Something about it seems like it was meant for the people.  As always, I give things away simply to say thank you, to all of you, for being in my world.  All you need to do is let me know you were here by leaving a comment on this post and I’ll count you in the drawing for this piece.

If you need a bit of prompting for your comment, feel free to tell me what you think about this quote a friend shared with me the other day!  If you’re a shy one, feel free to simply say ‘hi’.  Anything goes.

“There is a wonderful passage in Rilke’s essay on Rodin where he discusses this mysterious dimension of beauty. Rodin’s art “was not
based upon any great idea, but upon the conscientious realisation of something small, upon something capable of achievement, upon a matter
of technique. There was no arrogance in him, he devoted himself to this insignificant and difficult aspect of beauty which he could survey, command and judge.
The other, the greater beauty must come when all was ready for it as animals come to drink when night holds sway and the forest is free of strangers”.
[Invisible Embrace by John O’Donohue]
This giveaway will be closed on Monday, December 3rd at midnight.
Thanks and love,
The Plume
