[Nothing makes me feel half so great as a good wander on the land I love.]

Comments

  1. makes me feel pretty doggone great to look at the photos you captured whilst wandering!!
    thanks for that!
    xoxo

  2. On my way to bed, I suspect the dreams will now be good, great…
    xo

  3. divine pics lovely one…i hope you know that horsetails were used, back in the day, for scrubbing pots and such…kind of like an sos pad naturally:) sleep tight…

  4. Oh man! These images just smack of sweet freedom. I love that last one of you. And long for the mountains something fierce still.

  5. Dang, so stunning – beyond envious! XO

  6. wauw…..
    what a beautiful post
    i think our wirehaired dachshund
would have loved to come along ;^))
    with greetings from the Netherlands

    • Wirehair!!!
Penelope had mud up to the top of her back by the time we arrived home. I can only imagine what your pup would have looked like. Golly, is there anything cuter than a wire-haired doxie???

  7. i have seen that deep blue just above the mountains more than once this year….it amazes me that sky-colour can be so profoundly intense without being viewed through a special lens or screen.

    and, oh….that pene….how i love that little weiner….

    sending you some love, too….x

  8. I also have to say I just love Penelope! You must have fun with her after the more “serious” GSPs who don’t fit in a hole in a tree!! I vote for more Penelope pics!

    • She’s lots of fun. I don’t always get to play with her outside like I did yesterday because usually I’m running with the big dogs and she can’t always handle 9 or 10 mile runs — at least, not every single day. She can do a distance like that about once a week. Anyway, always fun to hike with her and photograph her antics while we are on the mountain! She is very intrepid.

  9. Luscious!
If only I could find scouring rush around here. I’ve tried.
The scenery along your trail looks so fresh and springlike. (We got four inches last night).
    That last picture…THAT LAST PICTURE!
    A real gem.

    • Want me to mail you a bundle?

Creekside is SUPER fresh right now. Really beautiful and mucky and oozing with the promise of life.

Pretty sure you caught the brunt of that storm system — heck, it raged its way over to you. We had 50mp-ish winds here yesterday and I thought of you. FOUR inches! You must have been brokenhearted this morning. 🙂

  10. Love everything about this post. Makes me want to grab my doggies and go for a long stroll through the woods.

  11. Penelope in the tree!!! Made my morning.

  12. I always love your adventure photos, especially the ones out in nature!
That shot of little Penny in the tree is priceless! (and is that one of the new Burton packs I see? I have been coveting them, do you like it?)
Big hugs to you and all your beasts!!!
    xxoo

  13. Elizabeth Waggoner says

What a great day “out of the studio” for you – and for US! LOL! Looking forward to those streams and paths and buck rail fences. Did Penelope love her little nest?
(And as a knitter – love your hats! Still think I’m going to make you one! Orange, of course. Mountain visibility.)

    • Baby, high visibility is my middle name AND I am one of the few people on the planet who wears bright orange quite frequently.

I’m so lucky, people send me knit goods all the time and I wear all of my gloves, toques, neck warmers and scarves from folks like you and love and cherish every piece. You guys keep me warm. Literally.

I love the buck rail fences…they help to contain the indelible spirit of the West.

Penelope loves ANY hole she can get her paw, nose or body in. Instinctually, she is pure dachshund, she comes from a long line of badger hunters, you know. 🙂

  14. Penelope wins the big blue ribbon… xx

  15. So beautiful!

  16. Those golden eyes… That looming storm…

That’s me set for the day.

  17. As always, I am transported when I look at your pictures! Wild Girl. I always squeal just a bit when I see Penelope on the screen. Love her!

  18. an amazing series – the colours are so wonderfully rich. love you in your bean boots – we are getting close here where i can switch to something lighter for our wanders, which is good since mine are so well worn the soles are cracked and losing their grip – but i can’t send them away because right now i still NEED them everyday!

    • AH! There’s never a good time to send gear in for repairs. I had seven holes in my turquoise down jacket and could not send it back to Patagonia for warranty or repair because I was convinced I could not go without it…not in August, not in January, or any other month in-between! HA! Eventually I bit the bullet and sent it in — they are REALLY quick with replacement and repair. Bless ’em.

      Beans forever, baby.

  19. one of the (many) things that draws me to your pictures are the colours. they’re so blooming delicious. so vivid. im perfectly sure if you held each on your tongue they would all have an individual glory of a taste.

  20. What a glorious post. A doggy, watery, pom-pom hat, walking boot, taste the air post! Thankyou. I live in Western Australia and we are coming to the end of one of the hottest, drought ridden summers on record. Your images have refreshed my soul!

  21. Penelope in a tree!! hee hee! Love it. Tater’s eye’s are stunning.
Beautiful pics! Thank you for the reminder to get out there. March is my least favorite month, so I tend to hibernate.

    • March can be hard. Actually, while out hiking and photographing this post, it snowed on me, rained on me and sleeted a bit too, most of the day we had 50mph winds with 70mph gusts (a friend’s tree, a big spruce, actually UPROOTED and fell on her HOUSE!). It was COLD. It was a hideous day to go strolling but I managed to find a way to love it, anyhow.

Get outside, you’ll love it anyhow. 🙂

  22. Omg. Penelope in a tree!
    Wolfy eyes on Tate.
The golden light, the air, the sky.
    YOU.
    Love love love.

  23. I’m fairly certain “The Magnificent Whole” would be the perfect title for your book. There will be a book … yes? xo.

    • By and by, the book comes!!!!! XX

      • Really!?! This is magnificent news! So deserved. And vital.
May I ask more details? Primarily writing? Photography? Who is the publisher? Working on this book with you would be a dream job for an editor like myself…
        xo.

        • At this point, I’ll be self publishing. 🙂 I think mostly writing, with a smattering of photography…

          • Ohhhh, I just want to sit down for tea and pick your brain about the direction you want to take it and if I could help! I’ve already passed your blog by the desk of one of the Canadian publishers I used to work with. Your writing just has so much heart, it would be an unmistakable gem on anyone’s shelf.

          • What!!! 🙂 You could not possibly know how much that means to me. Thank you, so much, for believing in my writing and my ability. Gosh.

            Thank you.

  24. Such a beautiful feast for the eyes, thank you

  25. Beautiful pictures! I absolutely love the colors. I am so glad I stumbled upon this part of your wonderful blog. Completely refreshing during these long summer months. Did someone make that hat for you or did you buy it somewhere? I am on the lookout for one like that for upcoming fall and winter hikes! Again, beautiful pictures.
