One Hummus To Rule Them All

Here’s what happened.  I was running around town all morning long, like a mad hatter, and once I arrived home, I got to cleaning the Airstream in preparation for loading the studio into its summer space.  Halfway between then and now, I found myself working on three of my canvasses in the studio (to my great delight, they’re coming along beautifully).  After painting, I felt a touch hungry so I wandered towards the house, only to stop to hang the wet laundry on the line before making my way to the kitchen.  By the time I finally arrived at the refrigerator and looked inside that cool contraption, I couldn’t imagine what to make myself to eat.  I shut the fridge, turned around, and there was my jar of garbanzo beans I’ve been sprouting the past three days.  Voila!  Fresh hummus.  Here’s how I did it.  You’re going to thank me for a hundred years for this extremely simple recipe.

The Hummus To Rule Them All

1 clove of garlic chopped

1 can of garbanzo beans (half the liquid reserved)

4 tbsp lemon juice

2 tbsp tahini

1 tsp salt

black pepper to taste

2 tbsp olive oil

——————————-

Throw it all in the blender and whip it until it’s smooth-ish, light and fluffy.  Once it has reached a consistency you like, scoop/pour it into your serving container and devour with the aid of fresh veggies, a slab of toasted bread, or tortilla chips.

So easy, it really is criminal.

****************************************

Because I am rebellious by nature, I never directly follow a recipe so here are the changes I made:

*I used 3 cloves of garlic instead of 1 (love the stuff, always use more than a recipe calls for).

*I sprouted my own garbanzos instead of using canned garbanzos which is, yes, good for you.  Here is what my sprouter set up looks like.  Very simple.  It’s a mesh screw on lid attached to a mason jar.  Get one as soon as you can.  You can sprout all kinds of stuff:  beans for bean salads, clover, mustard, wheat grass, lentils, chia, ALL types of seeds…broccoli…the list goes on and on.

*I also squeezed two large lemons into my blender instead of using four measly tablespoons of the stuff.  Again.  I really really like lemon, and lime.  My hummus has a very zesty flavor.  If you don’t love the zest, don’t use this much lemon.

*Once I have my garden going in Winthrop, I’ll be adding fresh herbs to this recipe for a little extra zing.

I can’t wait to make this for RW when he gets home from Spokane tomorrow.  He’s going to take one bite and then run out to buy me a brown and white spotted pony.  Yup.  It’s just that good.

Speaking of buying things, this morning I splurged on what is going to really elevate our cooking efforts this summer.  As some of you know, the little cabin in the woods is equipped with only a two burner electric hot plate.  I HATED it last summer.  I hated it with the fire of a thousand burning suns.  This year, I’m going to be baking and doing all kinds of crazy stuff with my new, beautiful, toaster oven.  Oh man.  Just thinking about it puts my turquoise soul in some kind of fuzzy little heaven.  Hit that link and just look at that thing!  I’m going to bake bread, muffins, pizzas…holy coyote!

Holy coyote.

Oh, one last thing, have you seen the Airstream bed?  Robbie finished it!  It’s amazing.  As we all knew it would be.  Yay!

Everything is coming together now and when we go, I’ll go gladly.

  1. I am smiling at your grand efforts…have been dying to do some sprouting, and now I am going to try it…my own little biology experiment…love hummus…Jillian…please make more ruthy necklaces : ) would you also solve some of my chemistry problems? xx

    • It is totally a little biology experiment. Every time. I’m hatching broccoli seeds now. Can’t wait to watch them come alive!

I have one more Ruth almost finished. 🙂

And I would LOVE to solve your chemistry problems! I loved chemistry. Lots. But I didn’t like it when Mr. Kreutzweizer called me “Miss Lewinsky” when handing back labs…while proceeding to laugh his head off. Every time. I hated getting my labs back.

  2. And now.. I wish to go home and make some hummus. OH my!

I also must learn more about this sprouting business… I remember helping my mom do this as a kid – hmmmmmm

    • My mum was into the sprouts when I was little too. She actually recently started up again. We love it. Instant fresh grown greens…nice too when you are craving gardening but the seasons don’t permit.

  3. that little oven is going to change your life!…I lived with one of those and a 2 burner hotplate for years…amazing what you will be able to do….garlic, elixir of the gods!…I love hummus….
will have to try your version…xx

  4. I’ve made that hummus, I added FOUR lemons, and now I’m getting ready to ride my chestnut spotted pony over a state and hand him over to you. (But, after summer, can I have him back?)
Oh! The bread and muffins you will bake! And it looks like you will sleep soundly in your RW special bed! You’re getting into it now, I can feel it!
PS: you are no lewinsky. Trust me. 😉
    XX

    • OOH!!!
You REALLY know how to bring the zest!

I’m going to try FOUR lemons next time. Just to keep up with you.

      Yes.
      I will take that pony.

I know. I know. I’m no Lewinsky. HA HA!!!

  5. GARLIC!! Last year, we planted a bajillion garlic plants and made a minced garlic paste with olive oil and canned it. It is the best thing ever. Summer fresh garlic year round AND it is already minced AND super concentrated so a jar lasts forever. I just throw a dollop into stir fry or bread dough or spread it on toast or mix it into soups and it is amazing.

    • OOH! Cuz. Yup. We love the garlic too. My crop sounds a LOT smaller than yours though. I’m going to buy a load of it at the Twisp Farmer’s Market this year and maybe I’ll can it too…

  6. ….then you’d best make sure robert buys for you a smallish brown-n-white pony so that it easily fits into said airstream for the long trip westward….

    YAY!….an oven!….

    xx

    • Maybe we can find one small enough that it fits in one of the drawers under the bed…

      • HEY.
        you said: holy coyote.
i completely missed it ’til i re-read your post.

holy coyote, that’s one sweet toaster oven.
guess the salmon filets h’better be cut into smallish pieces, eh?
so glad you posted the link….now i know what to tell mister pencilfox come salmon processing season….

  7. Oh wow I need to try your hummus recipe! It sound so delicious. I have tho confess tho I never really liked hummus. Not before my sweetheart made some for me last spring, and was I a goner then. Yup I love it now.
I’d really like to try sprouting too. Have’nt plucked up engough courage to give it a go,..yet.
Uh huhuh, I so yearn for land. I’ve been carrying it inside in buckets. Planting flowers and herbs to grow on the windowsills. A few nights ago I even saw a dream of me planting tomatoes and cucumber, zucchinis like crazy in huge HUGE flower boxes on our courtyard ( that’s just concrete as we live in the citycenter)… Must be losing it slightly.

By the way loved your work on the brevious post. You photograph your work ( always!!)so beautifully as well!

    • Try it all!!!

If you loved your fellow’s hummus recipe, you’ll probably like this one too. Everything is better when it’s made at home.

Do please start sprouting. It’s so easy. Don’t be afraid. Worst case scenario, you mess up a batch of seeds. Who cares? Start a new batch!

Hope you find some land sometime soon. 🙂 Essential.

      Thanks for being so kind.

  8. Firstly…YEEHAW!
    Secondly…GIMME DAT HUMMUS! on it.
Thirdly…WHAT CAN THAT MAN OF YOURS NOT DO? stunning.

A wild summer awaits you and yours, jillian! XOXO

  9. Toaster Oven Deluxe Deluxe! It was made for your exact situation. I wouldn’t protest a follow up post of your results!

By the way – I started reading Father Elijah yesterday!

  10. I LOVE hummus! Thanks for the recipe – I will make it this week.
I have that little sprout thingy set up, but haven’t tried it yet. Maybe I will. I’m not the biggest fan of sprouts, but Mike adores them.
Toaster ovens rule! I love cooking in them! When I first moved into this apartment, as a single girl, the fridge was the first fridge ever made, and the oven was a nightmare. I had to lay on the floor to broil hamburgers – the broiler was on the extreme bottom, under the oven. Needless to say, I did most of my baking in the toaster oven.
Yay! Awesome bed!!!! That is just fabulous and gorgeous!
Safe and delightful travels to you, dear J!
    xx E

I have never taken time to say that your blog is a very special one. You write beautifully, your jewlery is really unique and pretty and most it’s who you are, your free spirit, your personality. your “way of life” simple, true, authentic, rare nowdays, modern at the same time, feminin but tough, you are a great person and your blog reflects it perfectly.
    Thanks.

  12. Great recipe, thank you 🙂

  13. Woah girl. I never knew you sprouted! Of course, it makes sense. It’s those little things (ha ha ha) 🙂 I can’t wait to get my sprouting going again when we move. Speaking of Hummus…we always add some spice. I love to throw pickled jalapenos into the mix…and artichoke hearts. YUM.
